I asked:

The answer:

I had a sneaking suspicion that this was an easy/stupid question; it was.
What I'm wondering is how on earth I managed to get an engineer at Sun
who didn't know the answer to this question.

The -i flag to SNM not only loads your database from a flatfile, it also
forces SNM to reload all of its schemas. Saving the existing database
to a flat file and then loading it back in again with the -i flag from
the command line worked like a charm.
