All I have to say is thank goodness it's the US Thanksgiving Day
holiday weekend, because that kept the number of replies to a minimum.
After I had posted my original message, I realized that after making
the appropriate changes to /etc/inetd.conf I had it in my mind to
restart the "init" process, not the "inetd" process. I issued a -HUP
to inetd and rdist now works.
Sigh. A mind *IS* a terrible thing to waste.
