Hi,
After a couple of weeks unable to solve the problem, it turns out out that
it was entirely of my own doing. We had ssh installed and the entry in
/etc/services was something like:
ssh 22/tcp secure login
and it was the word "login" which was confusing the situation with rlogin/rsh.
Commenting out the "secure login" part fixed everything.
Thanks to those who endeavoured to help:
"Hanna, Brian" <Brian.Hanna@dataserv.com>
Kent Clarstroem <kent@syd.dimension.se>
...not to mention the excellent people at Sun.
