Here is my original question:

The answer appears to be, yes. One must take care regarding the boot prom version (some have said and the sparc 20 hardware manual, which we finally found!, seems to imply) must be sufficiently up to date to use 32 Meg SIMMS. Almost all agree a module should be installed in the first slot, although there seems to be a range of opinion on whether the modules should be installed in some sort of order.

You should place the 64mb simms in the system first, i.e. bank0 , etc. fill each bank with the same size simms, do not mix 64 & 32 mb simms in the same bank.

Hi,
A buddy of mine has a Tatung SS20 clone, and he upgraded from 64MB to 128MB by adding a 64MB module to the initial (four) 16MB modules.
Just plugged it in the next available slot, and away he went.
I'm pretty sure that the Sun would be have the same way.

The largest sized simms need to go in the first bank, (u201??) and then you can put them in any order. If you have your harware manuals, there should be a guide to installing Sparc20 Memory.
If you put 64 Meg simms into consecutive banks, you get a large block of contiguous RAM. I'd put them in this order, all the 64s, all the 32's and then the 16s, following the bank order on the motherboard.

Are you putting the 64 meg simms next to the SBus slots?
You need to have your largest Simm next to the SBus slot. After that the order can be random.
I have found that you can put the 16's in the slot next to the SBus slots, and have a 64 meg elsewhere, and the system will work. It is not supposed to, but it does.

Your 64 MB simm should be placed on the first slot: J201.
The others sould be placed in the order:
J303, 202, 301, 305, 203, 302, 304

The only thing you have to consider is to have a memory module (any ol' size will do) in the slot closest to the disks, or the system won't boot. Then you can mix modules in the other slots just as you want to. Remeber to keep some room for air though (if you can..).

Everyone seemed to be in agreement that the largest simm should go in the 0 slot. Where the rest went -- most people said didn't really matter, some said that to be sure I should use slot 0, 1, 2. That's what I did, put the 3rd party 64 simm in slot 0 & the two 32 simms in slots 1 & 2. So far so good!
Some people had bad experiences with 3rd party memory & others didn't. A couple of people sent me nifty diagrams (since it's hard to tell exactly with slot is which -- no clear lables on the motherboard!)

I think you need a recent version of the boot prom to use the 32Mb SIMM's. Do you know what revision you have? I think 2.19 and 2.22 will work with these parts.

In my experience, and as far as I know, as long as the SIMM in the first slot is of the largest capacity (64MB) all the rest is fine.
