THANK YOU! You have not only solved my problem, but gotten my boss to
approve Sun Software support!
The problem was:

The answer is to get and install patch 102416-01 for Sun 4.1.4.
The patch is NOT available at the normal public repository for
recommended and security patches:
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/patches
... I guess because it wasn't life threatening. This patch is only
available if you have a software support contract.
