Many answers I got were valid for Solaris, and seemed to be unaware of
the difference with SunOS 4.x - the Solaris automounter is a much
improved implementation.
On Solaris, running automount again is enough to refresh the
tables. There seems to be no hope for old SunOS: one can kill
automount, but it does not really clean up until all automounted
filesystems are unmounted, and frequently freezes - even when a killed
with a TERM signal. On a heavily used system, with several
automounted partitions, it is easier to reboot than to order all users
off and wait for the system to become quiescent.
