ORIGINAL POST:

Sun Managers,

I tried connecting a PC based terminal program (COMit) with the serial
output of a headless SPARCstation 20 (Solaris 2.4) so I could log in.
I ended up crashing the machine. Has anyone done this before with
success?

This was performed as a trial run before I tried the same thing on
our new E3K, which has never been booted. Does anyone have any
experience in this?

Any help would be appreciated.

SUMMARY:

My problem was twofold. First, I didn't put the serial port splitter
on my A/B port. Therefore my serial connection was bunk from the start.
Secondly, when I made the initial connection, a break must have been
issued by my terminal program at invokation. This is essentially like
issuing a L1-A or Stop-A to the system - bad.

SOLUTION:

Log in remotely, bring the system down.
Connect the serial splitter cable to the A/B port
Connect the PC terminal program to the serial splitter
startup the terminal program and get the PROM prompt
everything works great

My deepest thanks to all those who responded and took extra steps to
resolve the problem offline.
