My original problem was that gcc would not compile, it gave an error message
/usr/ucb/cc: language optional software package not installed
(see below for exact error report)
The answer is Solaris 2.5 does not come with a c compiler!!
The solution is to get a binary of gcc from one of the many gnu sites e.g.
ftp://sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk/packages/cygnus-gcc-binaries
