From: Tricia Kha (tkha@wsgc.com)
Date: Mon Oct 07 1996 - 13:45:37 CDT

I got so much reply more than what I expected. Thank to everybody who replied. It was very helpful.

My original message:
====================

I have questions of setting up a Web server on solaris 2.4. This Web server,
I just want to set for internal use only. I'll summarize.

1) Where can I can get a WEB server software?. How much does it cost?

2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

Any additional tips are greatly appreciated.

Here are the answer:

Apache is by far one of the best. You can get it at http://www.apache.org/

It's absolutely free and it only cost time to compile, link and install it.

NSCA can be picked up at the NCSA archive site. Docs too but the server is not as sleek as apache. Finally the Cern http is another one but is not as fast as apache. Honestly I tried most of them and then some and apache is my favorite for a million reasons.

If compiling it is an issue lots of people here on this list have precompiled stuff available through FTP. We do and I could always let you steal it from our site.

> >2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

Of course O'reiley and Associates serie of Unix in a nut shell has a couple of good ones. Running an internet site might be the one for you even if you are just providing http inhouse. The base material that can be picked up at apache is dry but sufficient if you like it the express way.

> >3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

Quite bizare the first time but very easy in the end. You just have to have the patience to follow the instruction to the letter and be knowledgable enough to adapt it to your OS version.

> >Any additional tips are greatly appreciated.

Ask specific question when you get on the road and if you select Apache I will be more than happy to help you out.

or search for nsca or apache sever (free servers) or for netscape one (more expensive one, but still affordable).

I am using both CERN and NCSA ($0) as well as Netscape $1000. CERN and NCSA require compiling to get running. If you are interested I can lookup the locations for them - don't have it with me. An AltaVista search on NCSA HTTPD or SERVER should yield the location of the site.

NCSA and Netscape have online doc.

> > 3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

Depends on whether you have done it before. The free ones are probably a bit harder for the first timer. Pleanty of people floating around in cyberspace to help though.

Nothing - there are several free servers - CERN, NCSA,...

Very straightforward. Have a look at http://info.ox.ac.uk/help/wwwfaq/index.html

which should provide you with all the pointers you need.

We have serveral servers for internal use only. You can set this up (there are probably several ways) in the config file - have a look at the CERN example files.

hi,

not long ago (last july?) i posted a similar question and got lots of answers, unfortunately at that time i was overloaded with work (still i am) and never find time to summarize the replies i'd got (shame, shame, shame on me)

if you want i could send all of them (yes, still have them) and you could include them in your summary

btw, i finally choosed to install APACHE, richly featured, pre-compiled versions available, API featured (that makes easy to append home made modules, though there are so many already available that you better check whether it's already written), and all these for free. Of course, if you want support, it's available and not too expensive. You can subscribe to their list and, every friday, you'll get a report: bug fixes, improvements, next-release features, and so on.

the only drawback is that the docs about how to configure it are quite poor... i recommend you getting the O'Reilly book about 'Managing Internet Resources'

and that's all. remember to tell me if you want me to send you the replies i never summarized.

Tricia,

Which web server are you trying to set up NCSA is *very* straight forward, it takes less than 20 minutes (most of it compile time) to do the basic setup.

You can get a FREE web server for Solaris from www.aolserver.com. It is full featured and has excellent performance.

>2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

Documentation is on line at their web site.

>3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

You just need to register at the web site and then download the installation. It is a compressed (or gzipped) tar file. Just create an account for the server and extract the server to the home directory. Then follow the setup instructions. You can have a web server up and running in 10 minutes.

It consumes very little memory if you don't do any database access, but if you do it still has a small footprint. You can also download a limited, bundled version of the Illustra ORDBMS. The server comes with links into Illustra.

http://www.apache.org then download Apache 1.1.1

I believe it's free for anyone to use.

>2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

Apache has online documentation but see Que's Apache 1.0 book online: http://www.mcp.com/289268882499499/que/et/webapache/index.htm

>3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

It's pretty straightforward. Just create the directories and edit three files and you're up (after compiling the source, if need to).

>Any additional tips are greatly appreciated.

Pay attention to the WWW security lists, newsgroups, literature. And use your professional common sense. And be sure to create local web policies (content-wise, security-wise, etc).

I'd recomend starting with Apache. It's *free*, works quite well, is stable, standard, etc. Documentation is available on-line. Should at least be enough to get you started, I think. We've been running it on our (simple for now) pages for a while, and it never seems to have a problem, and I know of a lot of sites that are running Apache, too.

Ok. Here' the Apache web page: Start from there. http://www.apache.org/

Let me know ifn you have any problems and / or questions.

1. you can ignore the message. Somewhere in the makefile a '-2' flag was defined and passed to the linker, don't worry, it's not a valid flag for it and that's why the message. The linker ignored it, you do the same.

2. i've only seen the servertype & port options in the httpd.conf

also, beware that setting the server to use a port different from the default one, will force your URL to be, http://www_your.domain.com:8080 another problem is that many web browsers running behind firewalls are only allowed to use port-80, thus, they will not reach your server

3. seems ok

so, in 'httpd.conf' what's your?

ServerRoot if set to '/usr/local/etc/httpd' you will not have to tell your daemon where to find the configuration file

suggested: ServerRoot /usr/local/etc/httpd

Listen i'm not sure, but i think you'll have to tell your daemon were to listen other than the default port

suggested: Listen 8080

and then it should run, beware that if you've changed the default ServerRoot you'll have to indicate it when you start the daemon,

# /usr/local/etc/httpd/httpd -f /usr/local/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf \ -d /usr/local/etc/httpd

Give it a try and let me know if it works. If it doesn't, well, i'll need more info.

PS i've attached the shell script i placed in /etc/init.d to start/stop the daemon (ie at boot time) you'll have to customize it to your site Then, link it

# ln -s /etc/init.d/httpd.server /etc/rc2.d/K70httpd.server # ln -s /etc/init.d/httpd.server /etc/rc3.d/S19httpd.server

this will automatically start it when entering state 3, and kill it when going to state 2 (or lower)

Apache from http://www.apache.org/ , and $0. (Can't beat that price :).

> 2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

It comes with example configuration files and there's online docs at their site.

> 3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

I've been running Apache for the group I work for's internal httpd and our external company's site (http://www.bwi.bls.com) since around the first of the year. I haven't had any problems with it. If you've never installed an httpd before you can pretty much just use the example files and install everything in the default locations.

Hope that helps.

I did this after only 6 months of unix experience, it was really easy. I went to the NCSA httpd web page, and there are directions and download info there. I just read along, and did what it said. Then I got some html books so I could make my own web pages. That was it!

1) Where can I can get a WEB server software?. How much does it cost?

2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

It does not matter. Actually it's the best web-server for today. > 1) Where can I can get a WEB server software?. How much does it cost?

Right there. You can download binaries or sources for free. > 2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

They've got a good documentation on their web-site. > 3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

Pretty easy - it comes with examples of conf files, so you just need to change them according your network configuration to start with. > Any additional tips are greatly appreciated. > > Thanks in advance > Tricia Kha > > ****************************************** > Tricia Kha > Manager of Database Management > Phone: (415) 616-8697 > Fax: (415) 616-8450 > ******************************************

there is a binary ... you could try that first and then do the source version. [that will make sure the config is ok - tell me how you go] kimble. 8*) i did not compile under 2.4 - just saw the binary [osf & irix] see [quicker too] http://www.apache.org/dist/binaries/solaris_2.4/

if you are running httpd in standalone mode you'll have to remove the httpd/8080 entrance in /etc/services. Otherwise, i guess that inetd is taking over it and not letting httpd bind to this port

check in your httpd.conf file for the ServerType definition. Usually you want httpd to bind to its own port and avoid the overhead of having httpd traffic go through inetd

about the servername directive. If you've set it to something different than your real hostname, you'll have to include the alias it in the /etc/hosts file or in the NIS+ table. About the last i'm not sure, i'm not familiar with NIS, but i had my web server name aliased from 'carbon.uab.es' to 'mrui-web.uab.es' and it failed to correctly work (in spite of being defined as an alternative hostname in the university nameserver) until i included it in /etc/hosts

# # this machine. Also the web server, aliased to mrui-web and bbm-web # xxx.xxx.xx.xxx carbon.uab.es carbon loghost host mrui-web bbm-web

so i guess the same holds true for the case of using NIS/NIS+. Alternatively, you could set a small /etc/hosts file and instruct the /etc/nsswithch.conf to read in as a last resource.

let me know if this fixes the problems

1) Where can I can get a WEB server software?.

www.w3.org ?/pub/WWW/Daemon? -- Cern server www.ncsa.edu -- NCSA www.apachie.org www.netscape.com www.oracle.com

-- plus I know that there is a server built in java

How much does it cost?

The first three above are free.

Netscape for edu's is free but costs money for .com's. I don't know how much they are but their server's are nice and the have nice web administration front ends which could make them well worth buying if you don't have a lot of time.

I have downloaded Oracle's, put I haven't played with it yet. It seems to me that if you have an Oracle database it aught to just plug right into your and get data out eliminating a lot of scripts or third party software and might be pretty darn fast.

2) Is there any books or tutorial tell you how to set up?

There are FAQ's with the PD web servers, and then there are lots of books. Is there a Barnes & Noble or Book Stop close by - they'll have a wall of books on this topic.

3) How easy to set up and what's need to make it happen?.

Pick a place to build the web tree, compile and install the server.

For the public domain ones, you can restrict for internal use with TCPwrappers which is what I have done. With Netscape you can tell it what hosts have administrative access and specify a domain for user access. To be fair, in the cern and the apache server's configuration files there is an option to specify the domain. But I feel better with tcpwrappers.
