The quandary:

:
:This is my first foray into the Solaris world so I hope that this is not
:common knowledge or in the FAQ (I didn't find it in my search).
:
:I have 2 printers here that I would like to get working. They are both
:ordinary PostScript printers that worked just fine on the older
:machines. One is a Seiko ColorPoint (CH-4104) and the other is a TI
:MicroLaser. I'll concentrate on the Seiko. I have installed the
:necessary tools to get the printer working. (For some reason they were
:not on the system.) I've added the printer using the admintool and
:manually using lpadmin. I can see the printer with lpstat and jobs are
:being queued.
:
:I get the error:
: Message from lp on putter (???) [ Fri Sep 27 21:01:35 ] ...
:Subject: Problem with printer lps
:
:The printer lps has stopped printing for the reason given below.
:Fix the problem and bring the printer back on line
:to resume printing.
:
:The reason(s) it stopped (multiple reasons indicate repeated attempts):
:
:printer powered off or disconnected; source: parallel<EOT>
:
:Neither of which are true.
:
:I've looked through my SunSove CD and tried several things based on that
:information (limited at best), but it still is not working. I've seen
:several references to filters in the last few months posts, but nothing
:that helped me.
:
:What am I doing wrong?

It was the cable. SUN, in their infinite wisdom, has changed the parallel
connector type on the workstation. Of course it would be nice if they
let their tech support people know this is the case. Several times
while talking to them I mentioned swapping cables with a PC to make sure
it was not a cabling problem. This did not throw up any red flags to
them. So much for quality tech support...

The answer came from a very helpful soul named Wis Macomson. It took a
few notes back and forth but he checked a few things for me and pointed
me in the right direction.
