This is a partial summary--my problem still did not get fixed. My original question:

I am running SunOS 4.1.3. I don't understand why cron daemon is not running. I look
at the rc file and the command to start cron is there. Even when I start cron manually
it does not stay running. Isn't cron suppose to run all the time? Please help. Any
suggestion is welcome.

I received helpful suggestions from the following people. My apology if I miss anyone.
My appreciation to everyone who replied to my SOS.

Mark S. Anderson at anderson@neon.mitre.org
Dan Lorenzini at lorenzd@gcm.com
Tim Carlson at tim@santafe.edu
Frank Pardo at fpardo@tisny.com
E. John Benjamins at johnb@soliton.com
Nina Burns Pomeroy at nina@tumble.com
Jochen Bern at bern@uni-trier.de

1) I especially want to thank Mark Anderson for the suggestion to install jumbo patches
for cron and at. I found the patches at ftp site icase.edu in the /pub directory.

2) I also want to thank Mark Anderson for the suggestion on how to debug cron. Here's
how:

add this line to /etc/syslog.conf

cron.debug /dev/console

NOTE: the two tokens above MUST be separated by one or more tabs. See
syslog.conf(5)

3) Thanks to Dan Lorenzini, Tim Carlson, Frank Pardo, Jochen Bern for the following
info on cron daemon. This daemon should never die. To start it manually, you must
first delete the file /var/spool/cron/FIFO. Then type: /usr/etc/cron.

So I got all the patches from icase.edu and installed jumbo patches for cron and at
daemons. Unfortunately, my problem still did not get fixed. Let me restate the problem
now that I learned a few things.

At first cron is running fine. I would then submit a batch job with the batch or at
command. The batch job would run fine. But when the batch job is completed the
cron daemon would also disappear!

I still welcome any suggestion on how to solve this problem. Thanks in advance.
