You migh look at eecs.nwu.edu ftp site; there is a program
there called, i think, "hpfilter" which will allow you to do
this with an ethernet-connected HP. You may be able to adapt
this to work with a serially connected printer.

you can get HP printers to return a
HP PJL query to them before and after the job, i don't remember
the details but it is in one of the manuals you can mail away
for for free with a little card that comes with every laserjet.
