It turns out that the file /kernel/drv/options.conf had been changed (by
the installation script? a patch?) so that it had a line which
specifically told it to boot from the AUI. Removing this line allowed a
normal boot. (The original file was stored as
/kernel/drv/options.conf:2.5)

The line was:

        cable-selection="aui"

We found this line on all the machines that we had that are hooked up via
AUI. It is not necessary. I suggest that anyone who has machines hooked
up via AUI that may be switched to TP check this setting.

Other possiblities that were suggested:

o the tpe-link-test? eeprom variable could be set incorrectly
        o a "boot -r" could be needed
o it could be a bad tranceiver
        o a bad RJ45 connection.
