Thanks to All... the answer to my question is "NO" since turboGX is only
an 8 bit, the highest it can go is 256 colors.

No.

The TurboGX is an 8-bit card.

i am fairly certain they can only go up to 256 colors, but they can go to very high resolutions. you need to set options at the boot promt to change resolution on the cards... you can't do it from within openwindows.

Sorry, 256 is it (at least for simultaneous display). You would need a 24 bit frame buffer for greater color depth.

Many applications support the notion of colormap switching, so that applications can switch in their own colormap when the window gets focus. This causes the other windows to change to funny colors, but at least the one in focus looks correct.

Among the applications that can do this are Netscape and Framemaker.

Sorry, it is an 8-bit frame buffer so it can only display 256 simultaneous colors.

You can tell some programs to use their own colormap, which will allow it to use its own set of up to 256 colors independently from the colors used by the other windows on the screen (the exact option to do this varies between programs, check each program's manual for details), but you will then be subjected to what is known as "colormap flashing" -- all other windows will be displayed with incorrect colors while the private colormap is installed. -- Michael T. I don't think it can.

> anybody know if TurboGX Card can support higher than 256 Colors?? > if can support, how can I configure it in my Openwindows under Solaris 2.4?

Unfortunately, no. It's physically impossible -- not enough VRAM to support more colors.

You will need to buy at least an SX framebuffer on the older SPARCstations, or one of the Creator framebuffers for the new Ultra workstations.

TurnoGX has only 8 bit planes, therefore you can only have 256 colours at any one time...
