The question was:

> Would somebody tell me how to have the Solaris 2.4 users print
> over a printer which is connected to an IBM RS/6000(AIX 3.2)?
>

I have received 5 responses from three persons and 5 "me-too"s.

I have done what was mentioned in the responses and still have the following
problems:

(1) When I added a remote printer via admintool, I got the error message
saying that I have to run "lpsystem sun1" on "gswrs6k1", where
"sun1" is the Solaris 2.4 machine and "gswrs6k1" is the AIX 3.2 machine.
Since there is no "lpsystem" command on AIX, I used "ruser -a -p sun1"
    instead.
(2) When I printed a file, the print job was hanged in the printer queue.
The partial log message is shown as follow:

/var/lp/logs/lpNet file on Solaris 2.4 box using NIS+:

08/02 15:15:56 c 1785 gswrs6k1 Connection Attempt Retry(5)
08/02 15:15:56 c 1785 gswrs6k1 Could not connect to remote child.
08/02 15:17:56 c 1785 gswrs6k1 Could not connect to remote, exiting
08/02 15:17:56 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Starting.
08/02 15:17:57 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Could not connect to remote child.
08/02 15:17:57 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Connection Attempt Retry(1)
08/02 15:19:57 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Connection Attempt Retry(2)
08/02 15:19:57 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Could not connect to remote child.
08/02 15:21:57 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Connection Attempt Retry(3)
08/02 15:21:57 c 1866 gswrs6k1 Could not connect to remote child.

where "gswrs6k1" is the AIX 3.2 machine.

It seems to me that the lpd daemon on the AIX box does not respond
the request sent by the lpNet daemon from Solairs box, right?
(telnet, ping and ftp are all working fine between the two
systems, and /etc/hosts.equiv and /etc/hosts.lpd on AIX box are modified
accordingly to accommodate the requests sent from the Solaris box).

Would someone tell me what I should do next?
I will summarize ...

Jigang.

Here are the responses:

You can go through smit on the AIX box to the printer subsystem and
add access for the Solaris 2.4 boxes to do remote printing on it. On the
Solaris side, just add a remote printer via admintool.

Hello,

> On the RS/6000 side:

Somewhere around here, make sure you start the remote printer subsystem.
Sounds like it's not running.

> On the SUN side:

Here you need to goto admintool. Printer manager. Add remote printer.
Fill in remote machine, printer name, and style (BSD or System V, choose
System V). Then apply.

Write back if you have any trouble.

Good luck!

first.. go to the aix system and in the print manager system under smit
(either through print spooling or devices/printer) setup the remote print
server...

the menu driven system should be straight forward enough to go through... you
will have to enable network printing, print client access and probably start
up the lpd daemon.

then on the sun, setup a remote printer.. it should be by the book..

all this should be listed in the manuals/docs.. there isn't much to it.

let me know how far you get and if you get snagged...

Use admintool, select browse -> printers; select edit -> add -> access
to printer; put the printer name on AIX and Print Server name.

I you have a driver already installed:

Use smitty, select print spooling -> add a print queue -> local -> <pick
your printer type> -> add new printer -> <par. or serial> -> <type
names>

If you do not have a driver installed it will ask you for it. you can
use cdrom or tape or floppy to install it after you pick the printer
type.
