This is how I now understand it (apologies if I'm wrong). The "Recyclable"
of a tape merely means that it _can_ be recycled, it doesn't mean it will
automatically be overwritten if you put it in the drive. Old tapes that are
not full do not get marked as recycleable for some reason (they stay as
appendable).
To actually recycle a tape you merely have to "label" the tape again. This
will remove the index entries for the tape. Unfortunately this still results
in lots of disk chuntering and server slow down. This seems to be unavoidable.
Ah well...
Some people have come up with wierd varieties of scripts to help them relabel
the tapes (and I've done my own variation as well :-))
I think, in order to avoid the slowdown, I'll keep performing the index
deletion (but from a cron job because this can be done without the tape in
the drive).
