As many of you pointed out, the Eudora program was not the problem.
The Qpopper connection was...
When telnet-ing to the POP-adress:
elg# telnet elg 110
Trying 126.96.36.199 ...
Connected to elg.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
Obviously, something was wrong.
Solution: Use the CORRECT path to the popper program in the /etc/inetd.conf
