All thanks to all who lend me a helping hand. I have adopted the
method suggested by Nial O Broin using ASPITAPE with PCTAR. It works
absolutly fine with my tape drive. I have also try the nova tar on
my windows for workgroup but it did not recognise the sun tar format.
Again, Thanks everybody.

If your PC's SCSI card uses ASPI-compatible drivers, you can use
MKS Toolkit from Mortice Kern Systems, 35 King Street North,
Waterloo, Ontario Canada.
This package provides DOS executable versions of all the standard
Unix utilities, including tape reading and writing.

I have done this very successfully using a public domain program
called pctar
written by Greg Shenaut. pctar creates and reads Unix compatible tar
files and
when used in conjunction with a device driver called ASPITAPE it
reads and writes
tar files from tape drives. ASPITAPE is shareware which sits on top
of an ASPI
driver. Most reputable SCSI cards for PCs come with ASPI drivers. I
have used
the software described successfully with an Adaptec VL-bus controller
(not
surprising, as Adaptec wrote the ASPI standard) and with an NCR 83C10
PCI-bus
controller. Archie or some other search engine should be able to
locate these
for you. AFAIR, I got them both from Compuserve, where I found also a
public
domain program like ASPITAPE, but I could not get it to work.

If its going to work, you will be best using the GNU utilities which
have GNU tar with them. They are easy to locate . I got mine from
plaza.aarnet.edu.au. An archie server.

You can try GNU-tar on both (There's a special DOS-Version around.
But this requires an Adaptec (-compatible) controller & streamer on
the PC.).
I tried it and it worked for me.
Regards,
Herbert
