This group is great, and you guys really helped me out. It would
have taken me forever if I had to write these printcaps from
scratch, and I have no manuals for the printer. This way, I had the
printer running the day after I posted my question. Thank you.

Five days ago I posted a question asking about printcap enries for
an HP LaserJet IID (non-postscript) printer. Originally I just
wanted to get it running on the sun, but with the help of Brian
Desmond <brian@chimera.psych.unimelb.edu.au>, it is now running great
with windows machines on PCNFS.

Here is the original post:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have recently been conscripted into adminning a sparc ELC on a small
PC network at a library. We have a HP LaserJet IID that has been
sitting on the table next to it for a year while "the last guy was
trying to make it work".

The SparcStation ELC (4/25) is running SunOS 4.1.3 on an external 1.3G
disk pack. I'm trying to get it to print to the HP's serial port (port
A using a 1->2 splitter), but there is no printcap entry for this
printer. The closest I have is an HP LJ 4xx , and that's no good. I
can't even get the printer to respond at all!

The guy I inherited this system from munged the spool directory
pretty badly, including a cron job that chown'd a user directory
CONTINUOUSLY to the user's login. I didn't notice it untill I tried
removing that spool dir to make a new one (rolling my own printcap
entry). All of a sudden I got all these console errors from it. Had me
panicked for a miniute.

If anyone has a SunOS 4.1.xx printcap entry, I could really use it.
The HP site isn't much help, they just want me to buy one of their
print servers. I'm also going to try to share this thing with a bunch
of PC's using PCNFS 5.1, so if anyone has experience with this sort of
thing. . .

I don't have a whole lot of admin experience, and I'd be really
gratefull to anyone who can help me out. No one else around here knows
what ls does :)

Thanx ( and I will summarize )

The printcap's Brian Desmond sent me:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
[for the pc's]
lp|laser|HPIII Laser Printer:\
        :lp=/dev/ttyb:\
        :br#9600:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lpd-errs:\
        :rw:\
        :ms=raw,onlcr,ixon:\
        :sh:sf:\
        :sd=/var/spool/laser:\
        :mx#0:

[for the sun direct]

These work great.
The only thing I had to change was the baud rate. My printer would
only work at br#19200 :)

I also realized that I needed a null-modem adapter on the serial
line (brian's advice again).

I also recieved a copy of a Great Big list of printcap entries (126K)
put out by Sun from Thomas White <twhite@bear.com>. It pretty much
covers everything, and I'll be sure to hang on to it. If anyone
doesn't have a copy yet, send me a request.

A few people thought it was a postscript printer (my fault) and sent
me some printcap info for that.
