Original question:
On my network, all my suns print via a printer server under Solaris2.5
The printer in an Apple laser 16/600 PS which has an ethernet port
and an IP address. SO it's configured as a remote printer (name of the
printer Laser) on my printer server.
Exemple of my /var/spool/lp/admins/lp/printers/Laser/configuration file
Content types: unknown
Printer type: PS
Remote: laser-16-600
And in the /etc/hosts file :
192.134.146.229 laser-16-600
All is Ok and files are printed correctly using lpr or lp on any machines.
My (small) problem is that this printer is also a printer for a lot of Macs
on the same network and the are a lot of files to print.I have noticed that
the Macs have always a HIGHER priority on this printer so from my Sun side
my files are always waiting to be printed. In other hand the Sun's files
are always printed in last position when there are no more Apple files
to print.
If I look at the /var/lp/logs/lpsched file I found this
.....
06/04 17:33:15: laser-16-600: retrying.
06/04 17:35:45: laser-16-600: retrying.
06/04 17:38:15: laser-16-600: retrying.
06/04 17:40:28: The network process has terminated.
......
......
Exemple; I send a file to the printer. This one is printing a MAc file, so
I 'm waiting... But when this Mac file is finisched printing a new one is
arrived and THIS Mac file is now printing and not my Sun file... Grrr!!!
When there are no more Mac files to print , my Sun file is printed.. (at leat!)
Query: I want to print my files in the right position on the Laser printer.
Can I do this by changing something on my printer server? ( I've looked
the doc but found nothing about some specials options for the lpsched program)

It seems that there is not A Solution:
chp@yuanyuan.ucsd.edu (Christina Show) asks:
Is there a switch on the Printer that you can set the 'timeout'
to a lower number?
Response: This Apple is not mine, it's belong to the Mac users. So the
response I got form their, was switch or not switch, there will be no change
because it WORKS WELL for us.......
Peter Marelas <maral@sprint.com.au> says:
This sounds like the sun is "doing the right thing", whereas the mac's
are not.
Well, I'm happy...
>From Tom Mornini <tmornini@infomania.com>
The AppleTalk printing protocol demands that each printer maintain a queue
of print requests coming in from AppleTalk, so that the AppleTalk users are
handled in the correct order that the requests came in. It sounds like the
printer only accepts IP jobs when the AppleTalk is completely idle.
One obvious solution would be have all the Mac print jobs handled through a
central print server, perhaps even the Sun itself. There are Mac clients
for UNIX printing from Intercon (www.intercon.com) and UNIX servers for
AppleTalk (CAP is free and Helios is commercial from www.ugraf.com).
Ok. What I've learned, is that my printer server is well configured. It
is my first try on Solaris...
Since the Mac users position is inflexible, perhaps in a near future
I will buy a printer specially for Suns. By now files are at least
printed ....
