I've reached the stage where I have to upgrade,
Solaris 2.3 on a Sparc 10. I hear the cries
RTFM!! I read the FAQ and the archives. I am not
sure which version of Solaris to upgrade to.
I heard that Solaris 2.4 was buggy, required
loads of patches, and did not upgrade properly
thus requiring a full install.
I know nothing about 2.5 except that it supposedly
went through a rigorous beta stage, resulting in
fewer patches.
What do you recommend, upgrading or installing
to Solaris 2.4 or 2.5?
And why do you recommend it?

The number of replies was overwhelming.
They all carried a common thread:
Solaris 2.5
The reasons were also similar.
Basically they said to go with Solaris 2.5.
Why?
- Fewer patches, only 3 or 4 recommended patches
- Better performance over 2.4
- Incorporates 2.4 patches
- NFSv3 faster than v2
- CDE
- PPP
- Automounter
- Jumpstart/bootparams supports nameservice/netmask argument
- admintool transition to Solstice adminsuite cleaned up NIS+
So netboots are much more reliable during packet storms.
Should I upgrade or do a full install?
- Do a full install. Its quicker. Less possible problems
than doing an upgrade.
(Those that replied also mentioned that it might be worth
waiting for 2.5.1.)

In my haste sending the mail I neglected to include
something.
I recently installed Netscape Commerce server v. 1.12
on the Sparc 10 with Solaris 2.3. Netscape tell me
that it has not been certified on Solaris 2.5.
Anyone out there running NS Commerce 1.12 on Solaris 2.5 without
any problems, security or otherwise?
