Sysadmtool is a Public Domain software written in Tcl/Tk and freely available in
binary form as a SPARC Solaris 2 software package. It can be used as a
supplement
to Sun's own admintool (Solaris 2.4 or earlier) and AdminSuite for easing the
Solaris system administration burden. Similarly to admintool and AdminSuite, it
doesn't give you new functionality, but a set of comfortable, intuitive tools to
do the same tasks as with UNIX commands and config files.
The idea of Sysadmtool was born from experiences at our Authorized Sun Training
Center in Hungary. In Hungary as probably all over the world a big portion of
today's sysadmins are no UNIX gurus any more, but ordinally computer folks who
wants the same easy-to-use tools as accustomed in the PC world.
Development of sysadmtool started at September 1995, and as in April 1996 it has
four (hopefully well tested) modules for Basic Network configuration, NFS Server
and Client configuration and Mail configuration. We plan further modules as
described later.
The newest version of Sysadmtool can be reached at the
ftp://sunsite.math.klte.hu:/pub/sun/admin/sysadmtool and the
ftp://sunsite.kth.se/archive/utilities/sysadmintool URL addresses (The second is
a
mirror, which has faster network connection). We are grateful to Ivan Szkiba
(szkiba@math.klte.hu) and Klas Heggemann (klas@nada.kth.se) for providing these
FTP sites.
Any question, suggestion, opinion or bug report are welcome at the
sysadmtool@component.hu email address.
Good luck!

Features of Sysadmtool:
- Motif based GUI.
- It has now 4 main modules: Net Config Manager, NFS Server Manager, NFS
Client Manager and Mail Manager. Other new modules are coming.
- Integrates into Solstice Admintool (Solaris 2.4 and older
versions) and Solstice AdminSuite.
- User interface and action related routines are clearly separated so
it can be easely modified to fit in the client-server, central
management architecture of Admintool and AdminSuite.
- It has an on-line help.
FEAUTES OF THE NET CONFIG MANAGER MODULE:
- Configures all network data for a simple host connecting to a
corporate intranet or the Internet.
- Network parameters include:
Host Name
Domain Name
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Routers
DNS servers
- Sysadm doesn't need to know the name, location and format of the
several configuration files involved in these tasks.
FEATURES OF THE NFS SERVER MANAGER MODULE:
- Sysadm can define, modify or delete temporal and boot shares with all
parameters needed. Parameters include:
Name of the directory to be shared
Share now
Share at boot time
Root access for defined clients
Read-only access for all or only for defined clients
Read/Write access for all or only for defined clients
- Sysadm can do or undo a selected share or all shares, start or stop the
NFS server subsystem.
- Displays defined and current shares in short or detailed form.
- Displays client usage of shared directories.
FEATURES OF THE NFS CLIENT MANAGER MODULE:
- Sysadm can define, modify or delete temporal and boot mounts with all
parameters needed. Parameters include:
Name of the server
Name of the remote directory to be mounted
Name of the local mount point
Mount now
Mount at boot time
Remount
Read-write or read-only mount
Static or auto mount
Hard or soft mount
Foreground or background mount
Interruptible or non-interruptible mount
Allow or not allow set user id executable files at the mounted
file system
- Can handle static or direct automounts.
- Sysadm can do or undo a selected mount or all mounts.
- Displays defined and current mounts in short or detailed form.
- Discovers and displays NFS servers on your LAN.
- Displays shared directories on a selected server.
FEAUTES OF THE MAIL MANAGER MODULE:
- Mail Manager dares to be a GUI frontend to the infamous sendmail
configuration.
It helps you configure sendmail.cf and other related config files.
- It helps you configure typical mail systems described in Solaris Mail Admin
documentation and in other related works.
- On the first screen you identify your host's mail system type in two point of
view: Storing type and Forwarding type. Based on these choices you receive a
second screen with the appropriate further parameters.
- Storing type can be Mail Server, Mail Client or Standalone as described in
Solaris Mail Admin documentation.
- Forwarding type can be Subsidiary, Mail Host or Mail Relay as described in
Solaris Mail Admin documentation.
- At Mail Relays it allow you the possibility to route mails inside your
intranet
differently from other foreign mails (e.g. route mail inside your intranet
directly but foreign mails through a corporate mail gateway.
- At Mail Relay configuration (the most complicated task) you can define the
following parameters:
Your Domain Name
Your Domain's nicknames
Identify yourself in outgoing mails as host.domain or domain.
Domain Names and Nicknames in your intranet.
Intranet mail routing method
Foreign mail routing method
Mail Gateway (if needed)
Transport protocol (smart UUCP or SMTP) to the Mail Gateway (if needed)
Use or not to use DNS MX (Mail Exchanger) records for mail routing
- Extensive helps and postinstallation suggestions make mail configuration
(hopefully) even easier.
PLANNED FURTHER MODULES:
- Disk/File System Manager for managing partitions, disk mounts, file
system informations (du, df, quot), user quotas, cached filesystems and
swap partions/files.
- NIS+ Manager for configuration and security management of NIS+.
- Network Services Manager for displaying and enabling/disabling socket,
TLI and RPC based network services.
- Asyncronous PPP Manager
- UUCP Manager
- DNS Server Manager
