Original problem:
CDE refuses to start on a dataless client (2.5) mounting /usr, /opt etc. from
a server, also running 2.5 . No error messages whatsoever, no logging.
CDE was installed on the client using '/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -inetd' and enabled
with '/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e'.
Solution:
/usr/dt/bin/dtlogin had permission:
-rwxr--r-- 1 root bin
Changing this to:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin
+ doing the same on /usr/dt/config/Xsetup and /usr/dt/config/Xstartup
did the trick!
Dirk Boenning (boenning@igd.fhg.de) was the first to come up with the solution
with Rob Allan (rob.e.allan@hydro.on.ca) in second place, thank you guys!
An alternative is to export /usr with root privileges for the client machines,
but personally I'm a bit reluctant to that idea.
Funny detail:
Approx two minutes after I applied the changes to the files, SunService called
back (we have a 'Silver' contract) and suggested I should export /usr with root-
access.... Guess what I told him? :)
Thanks to all who responded!
