SUMMARY: How to apply patches ?

Many thanks to those who responded to my plea. Mike Kail was able to provide a full and working solution. The key is
get the patch program from prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/patch*. The commands from Mike are:

 ftp prep.ai.mit.edu
 cd /pub/gnu
 prompt
 bin
 mget patch*

 gunzip -c patch*.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
 cd patch*
 ./configure
 make
 make install

 patch -pX < patchfile
