Once upon a time I asked about WORM CD Drives and software for Sun. I ended up
using Gear software and a Yamaha CDE-100 Worm drive. Thanks to all who
responded!

I am searching for a worm cd drive for long term archives. We would like to be able to use the cd's generated in any cdrom reader, as a mounted file system on our Sun's. The units that Sun sells will not do this. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks! ================================================================================ Responses ================================================================================ From: Andrew Brown <asbro4@giaeb.cc.monash.edu.au> Date: Fri, 10 Nov 95 14:27:39 EDT
I currently use a Yamaha CDR100 WORM drive with Solaris 2.3 Gear CD writing software. We can write CDs of Standard or straight Unix files. The CDR100 is a quad speed disk, but you will require a separate CD driver for the CD WORM to act as a CDROM drive. I'm looking into this at the moment. This setup is fine and has been very easy to use after a few teething problems which are easily overcome.

We use a Philips CDD 522. This worm cd drive is Ok. We have no problems with it. The software we use is Gear. It is not user friendly and even only tty = based.

Pinnacle sells a multi-session cdrom burner that is just what you need. Cost is around $1400.

Please provide responses to your question. I have a similar situation and am interested in what others have done to resolve it.

There is a selection of CDR (compact disk, recordable) devices compatible with Sun's SCSI implementation.
Recently, both Hewlett-Packard and Pinnacle Microsystems announced CDR's for under $1,000. Only a year ago prices were over $3,000.
A CD created with a CDR should be readable in any CDROM drive.
Also, there are commercial services for creating CDR's - just check out the ads in SunExpert, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Larry Weissman Center for Bioengineering, Box 357962 larryw@nsr.bioeng.washington.edu Univ of Washington, Seattle WA 98195-7962 Phone: (206)685-2011 FAX: (206)685-3300 ================================================================================
