Dear All,

I am experiencing a baffling problem I am unsure how to rectify. The
dual-processor SS20 I am managing rebooted last night for no discernable
reason. That in and of itself is a puzzle. But what really bothers me is
the plethora of:

Feb 12 02:14:02 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver '<take your
pick>' messages in my /var/adm/messages log. Here is a sampling of the
drivers the system was unable to load:

Feb 12 02:13:50 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'isp'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'vme'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'mcp'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'mcpzsa'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'vme'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'mcp'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'mcpzsa'
Feb 12 02:13:52 minerva unix: Unable to install/attach driver 'stc'

(IN THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE I had attached a slightly more detailed listing.)

Has anyone run into this before and if so, what's up and how can it be
corrected?

This machine, as I stated previously, is a dual-processor SS20 running
Solaris 2.4 (with many patches). Attached are two SSA100s and an Exabyte
8500 XL drive.

If you could email me with your replies, it would be much
appreciated and I will, of course, post a summary.

Thanks,
Linda Maepa

---------------------------- Begin Summary -------------------------------

Basically, the unable to install/attach driver 'XXX' messages I was receiving
are fine and dandy to ignore and indicate nothing less than the fact that I
don't have the hardware specific to a particular driver installed on my
system.

Which is true.

Such a situation would be problematic if, for instance, I did have VME bus,
then I would be alarmed that the system couldn't install/attach the 'vme'
driver! However, this is happily not the case.

Luckily, the man pages contain information for each driver type (at least
for the ten odd or so which I double checked) so if in doubt, make use of
your man pages.

ALSO, this is a FAQ. How mortifying. It is FAQ 5.35 in the Solaris 2 FAQ
which can be found at various sites on the WWW and is associated with the
comp.unix.solaris newsgroup.

Thanks again to all the many who replied and take care,
Linda Maepa
