The general concensus seemed to be that the /var/yp-
directory was named that way to prevent NIS from
coming up. I therefore:
# deleted /var/yp-
# mkdir /var/yp
# cp /usr/lib/NIS.Makefile /var/yp/Malke
# ran /usr/etc/yp/ypinit [option]

Once NIS was working, I followed the Sun Managers FAQ on
how to setup DNS. In my case I also had to create a router
entry by creating /etc/defaultrouter file. And viola, I
had a working NIS/DNS system.
In short most people haven't had trouble using DNS with NIS,
and my system seems to be working just fine.
Thanks to all.
