Many came up with interesting suggestions. Only one person
came up with the correct diagnosis.

The "diag-device=" parameter in the eeprom had somehow been
changed from NET to DISK. Resetting this parameter brought
the IPX up. I must have a gremlin in the place. Thanks
again for all the suggestions.
