Sorry this took so long but this time of year is for holidays :)
Anyway, here is the answer as provided by kim@mso.anu.edu.au among others:
showrev falls over if there are non-directories within /var/sadm/pkg -
This directory must only contain the various SUNWxxxx directories.
Anything else (eg a core file!) will cause this behaviour.
This was echoed by all. Sure enough there was an empty file there.
