I got two responses, one of which hit the nail right on the head:

> It looks like one bitmap plane has RAM problems on your frame buffer,
> and it is the one used in text mode and also to display overlayed
> pixmaps in X. You should check and/or replace your frame buffer's RAM,
> or the whole card.
