I may as well summarise now.

The controller board died completely about an hour after I sent the
original message (wouldn't even pass POST). The folks at SunService
brought out another one and plugged it in. I downloaded the new
firmware, and did a "boot -r". It came up as "c1" and after resyncing
the parity and fscking the filesystems, I could access all of my
volumes (whew, no need to restore from Thursday night's backups,
as Friday's did not complete before the SSA malfunctioned).
