Folks,
Many thanks to the overwhelming response to my inquiry. Thanks...Sorry if
I missed anybody. But like I said I received over 30 responses...

Here is a abstract of responses I received.

From: florian@iagsun04.iag.uni-stuttgart.de (Florian Schlaich)

it's located on our ftp server ftp.uni-stuttgart.de
in /pub/systems/unix/...

There is PD zip, which is 100% compatible with
pkzip 2.04g. You can download it from ftp.uu.net
(192.48.96.9). I believe you can find it under
/pub/archiving/zip.
You'll find here both sources and binaries for
different platforms, including Solaris 2.x.

From: Bill Reed <reedwv@expu79.stp.xfi.bp.com>

Look for zip and unzip (zip201.tar unzip511.tar)
"The latest versions, including
the crypt sources, always appear in ftp.uu.net:/pub/archiving/zip
   (and subdirectories thereof) first."

From: "Michael (M.A.) Meystel" <MEYSTMA%DUVM.BitNet@pucc.PRINCETON.EDU>

Have you searched using archie? I have a copy of

UnZip: Zipfile Extract v5.0a BETA of 3-30-92; (c) 1989 S.H.Smith and others
Versions 3.0 and later by Info-ZIP. Bug reports ONLY to zip-bugs@cs.ucla.edu
From: Mike Fletcher <fletch@ain.bls.com>

No, GNU zip isn't pk compatible. Look for a package called,
I think, Info ZIP. That's a *NIX prog that will zip and unzip PK
zip files. Hope that helps.

Here's the 'Where' of unz50p1 (which I use).
If you can't find it, I can send you unz50p1 and zip201 by
E-Mail (Sources are 400k)

Note that some ftp sites may not yet have the latest versions of
Zip and UnZip when you read this. The latest versions, including
the crypt sources, are always in the comp.sources.misc archives.

Basic source-archive names for Info-ZIP's portable Zip, UnZip, and related
utilities (on some ftp sites, the .zip files may have a .zoo equivalent
in Zoo 2.10 format):

To get the VMS Zip/UnZip package by e-mail, send the following
commands in the body of a mail message to fileserv@wkuvx1.bitnet
or fileserv%wkuvx1.bitnet@ukcc.uky.edu (the "HELP" command is
   also accepted):

      SEND ZIP-UNZIP
      SEND FILESERV_TOOLS

> Folks,

> I could be wrong but gzip is not zip compatiable ? or is it ?

There is a unix program called "zip" that handles the pkzip encryption
method. use archie to search for something like zip*.tar.gz.

From: Mike Coughlin <mikc@gnu.ai.mit.edu>

The principal author of gzip says the name gzip is a mistake
that is too late to change. The compression algorithms for gzip
and pkzip are the same, but the arrangement of files in the
compressed archives is totally different. The pkzip program
collects files and compresses them, while the gzip program only
compresses a file and leaves their collection to Unix utilities
such as tar and pax.

From: Scott Spevacek <spev@badger.state.wi.us>

I have never heard of a version of PKZIP for any Unix platform, but
there is a version of gzip for the PC. If you do find out about any
Solaris pkzips out there, please share.

From: Andrew J Cosgriff <andrew@unico.com.au>

gzip uses the zip algorithim but doesn't write pkzip-compatible archives (gzip
is intended to be a replacement for compress, and as such you use it with, say
'tar').

You can get the sources to Info-Zip's zip and unzip for free.

I don't remember where they are exactly, but SimTel does have them (in zip
files of course...and bear in mind that the source from there will be in MSDOS
text format, so you'll have to strip the ^M's from the end of each line with
either unix2dos or a one line sed or perl script.

G'day,

Use the Info-zip software. Separate programs to handle archiving and unarchiving. Source is always available on

I think the compiled executables are available here somewhere too.

There ara many ftp sites where you can obtain this software. For example:

     ftp.cc.mcgill.ca /pub/src/utilities/compression
     qiclab.scn.rain.com /pub/sysadmin
     serv1.cl.msu.edu /pub/unix/utils

 There are two archives:

       unzip.tar.{Z,gz}
       zip.tar.{Z,gz}

Hi! This may not be what you are looking for, but our company sells
a ZIP and UNZIP for Unix that are fully 2.04pkzip compatible. They are
not in source form, however. If this is of interest, contact
info@computron.com. Thanks!

The programs you are looking for are UnZip 5.1.2 and Zip 2.0.1.

They can be found several places on the internet. I do not know where off-hand.
