SUMMARY: can't su to root under Solaris 2.3

Many thanks to all who replied (they're listed below). Several pointed
me toward /etc/default/login, including one very superior sounding
individual who replied "Did you just get off the bus or what? Read
/etc/default/login."

Actually, I did just get off the bus, but /etc/default/login wasn't the
problem. Casper Dik was the winner. He asked (in a quite civil tone)
"You don't happen to run a 4.x shell in BCP mode?" I was running a T
shell ported over from a machine running 4.x - I told you I just got off
the bus...
