Sorry for the late summary. My original question was:

What worked for me was:

Hi!

You need to open up the drive's box and change the DIP switches on it.
It's probably setup for work with HP or PC equipment.

contact your vendor for the setup you need on the drive you have
or try HP's support site on internet. (start with www.hp.com).

Good luck, Yossi.

The actual settings are included in the manual of the DAT but there it claimed
that the dip switches are external.

I use an hp tape drive in my system, I had to configure the dip switches on
it.
I get all the same messages you get about

>st0: Generic Drive, Vendor=<HP >
> 3.81mm helical scan cartridge
> Variable record length I/O

the configuration is as follows

there are 8 switches 1-8

switches 1-5 need to be on
switches 6-8 need to be off

I believe from the information that you are running 4.x, right? What
you'll need to do is add an entry in /sys/scsi/targets/st_conf.c. You can
use one of the other similar drive entries as a template.

Gruezzi Laurent,
        Two things to do

1) Re-configure kernel to recognise drive. This will give you maximum capacity
/ throughput on the tape, but lack of this should not cause your errors as
described.

2) Set hardware up correctly. I imagine the Surestore is a 35470A packaged in a
neat little box for the PC / Mac market - I've used these before under the name
Jetstore quite successfully on Suns. However, there is a switch bank on the
underside of the drive itself which must be switched differently for DOS and Unix.
As far as I remember, this was documented in one of the little booklets which came
with the drive. If you're stuck, try all switches the same way EXCEPT 6 & 7 or 7 & 8
I'm sorry to be vague, but it's been a while. The switches as they are now are mostly
set one way - this is the way you need and its either 6 & 7 or 7 & 8 which should go
the other way.

Ciao,

Niall

thanks to everybody!
