SUMMARY: printout is 'offset' on my sparc printer

And the answer is:

Lots and lots of people sent me helpful email telling me about these wierd
papersize setting magnets on the left side of the paper tray (such that they
are inside the printer, on the side of the paper tray closest to the power
switch, when the paper tray is loaded). One of the printers did in fact
have two of the magnets out of alignment, and this fixed its problem. That
wasn't the problem on my other SparcPrinter, but now that I know about the
magnets I'll just open up that printer and check the sensors inside the
printer that is supposed to read their location.
