Hello,

sorry for the delay but I wanted to complete the task and report all
 details before submitting a summary.

I originally asked if it was possible to put an old SBus board which was
installed in a Sparc 2 in a Sparc 10. The main problem was the metal backplate
which would not fit, the second issue was if it would work. The board was a
Localtalk network interface for a Mac<>Sun gateway software by Information
Presentation Technologies, they could not answer my question and did not
supply replacement backplates.

I would like to thank all those who answered and point out that my SBus board
does not have a removable top part like the new SBus boards have.
I tried installing the board without the backplate as some suggested, the
connection and mechanical stability seemed ok, the only problem was that when
the rear DB9 connector was not plugged in the board would fall onto the
motherboard. There are various metallic lids and components at the back of the
SS10 motherboard and these would touch the soldered PCB contacts underneath the
 board !!
I decided to file down the backplate to the right size, I used one of the
filling tabs that seal the holes at the back of the SS10.
I clamped both the filling tab and the backplate with a vice and filed down
the extra, note you must file down the part with the two ears. Be careful
before doing this part, it requires advanced knowledge of Solaris 2.4, although
Sunos 4.X will do also..... :-)

The SS10 SBus clock (I think !!) is 18 or 20Mhz, it is 1/2 of the processor
frequency on models 20,30 and 40, my old SBus board which has old dual-in-line
ICs on it works fine. I think that the SBus clock has been raised in the SS20.
Tim Hoffman told me that the old Ethernet card with THIN and AUI connectors
does not work in machines with the MBus though.

I would like to thank all those who responded and thank Ed Romascan for
 offering help. Thanks again to:
