Many thanks to those who replied to my question:

I have a couple of SS1+ systems each with a Sun 1.05G (Seagate)
desktop disk pack (no internal disks). When I try to boot either of these
they hang straight away, without spinning up the disks. The systems
can see the disks using 'probe-scsi' OK.
I can boot the systems from the net or a CD OK, & once a hard disk has
spun up I can stop the boot & reboot from the hard disk OK. However once the
hard disk has been powered down I'm back where I started. For some reason
it seems the disks won't initialise from the boot command.
Can anyone please help remedy this?
The systems have OpenBoot PROM rev. 1.3. The disk is a Seagate ST11200N
(Hawk). The system hangs on boot just after the message "booting from device
sd(0,3,0)", & the system will hang like this until a 'Stop-A' is used.

Two solutions were provided:
1. Change the jumper settings on the drive so it spins up on power-on.
By default the disks are installed to only spin up on receiving a
SCSI START_UNIT command. However there is a WS (Wait Spin) jumper on
the disk which can be removed to cause the disk to spin up on power-on.
The location of the jumpers can be found through Seagate's Web/FTP
servers (www.seagate.com/ftp.seagate.com).
2. Boot off a different SCSI target, not 0 or 2.
The SunSolve database has a logged problem for some external disks not
to be able to boot when using SCSI target 1 or 3 when using an OpenBoot
PROM version below 2.0. The symptoms described were identical to those
I'd encountered.
I went for changing the SCSI target as this was easiest, & the machine
booted fine straight away.
