SUMMARY: Upgrading diskless clients from 2.3 to 2.4

Well,

No one responded to my request for information so I went ahead and
upgraded a server to see what would happen. I was pleasantly surprised to
find that the suninstall upgrade procedure automatically checks for system
files in /export/root and then automatically upgrades them too as part of
the process. It sure would be nice if Sun mentioned this in the upgrade
section of the installation manual. One does have to apply the required
patches manually to each client. This step is described in the "Solaris
2.4: Latest News" pamphlet on P.3, "Installing Patches on a Diskless Client
from a Server". To summarize:

1) Halt the client

2) Mount the 2.4 CD on the server (the server can be up in multi-user mode)

3) On the server: "cd /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/Patches"

4) On the server: "./install_patches /export/root/CLIENT_NAME"

5) Reboot the client.

I've included my original question below for reference.
