SUMMARY: rup ignores local machines

Thanks to all whose replies I received and also to those
whose mail is still en route.

As suspected, the problem was trivial (hindsight is 20/20) :) .
Seems that le0 was being setup incorrectly. I needed to edit
/etc/rc2.d/S72inetsvc and set netmask and broadcast to match
the other machines. That did the trick nicely.

Thanks once again to all for the helpful advice. Original
post and replies in full below.

Original post:

I have a very annoying (but probably embarrassingly) simple
problem. On a small cluster of 5 machines (4 running versions
of SunOS and 1 running Solaris 2.4), we have access from every
machine to every other machine, and they all know each other by
name (for example, ftp (machinename) works just fine). They're
all connected through a small hub with nothing else in between. On
all the SunOS machines, rup shows every other machine. However,
on the Solaris box, rup only shows the Solaris machine and
ignores all of the SunOS machines. ??

The each use /etc/hosts of their own (no NIS), and the Solaris
machine has all of the other machines in its hosts file. This
is probably something trivially easy in the way Solaris is set
up, but I just can't put my finger on it. Anybody who can point
to the problem will earn my undying respect and heartfelt thanks.
Much appreciated.

Solaris 2.x uses a default broadcast of all 1s, SunOS 4
uses all zeros. Perhaps that's the problem?

One possibility is that the broadcast mask on the Solaris box is incorrect.
Since rup sends a broadcast query to hosts on local network.
The mask should only cover hosts on your local network (The 5 suns).

The problem is in what the broadcast address in on the machines.
Make it the same on all and you should be OK. The "default" on
SunOS was wrong from day 1.
