First of all, thank you for your speedy response. The answer that really worked
for us was from sho@oaktech.com (Steven Ho):

> I assume you use smartuucp mailer to deliver mail. Modify the 4th and
> 5th line in sendmail.cf file:
>
> S22
> R$*<@LOCAL>$* $:$1
> R$-<@$-> $:$>3${Z$1@$2$} invert aliases
> R$*<@$+.$*>$* $@$1<@$2.$3>$4 already ok
> R$+<@$+>$* $@$1<@$2.$m>$3 tack on our domain
> ^^^ <--- remove the "$2."
> R$+ $@$1<@$w.$m> tack on our full name

Few people pointed me to look at our DNS for the missing domain name. At the
moment, as we are only using e-mail via UUCP, DNS is not used. Damian Murphy
<dmur@bssssq.edu.au> suggested a different rewrite of the rule S14, which I
didn't try as the above worked for us. <covingto@NADN.Navy.MIL> suggested an
upgrade to sendmail-8.6.12, which among other enhancements offers better config
options and more security. Such upgrade is already planned at our site. There
were also the customary me-toos.

Thanks again for your help.
