summary of "using domain name servers"

I asked a question earlier about why I could successfully do an nslookup on a internet
domain name, I could ping that site if I used its ip address, but I couldn't ping that site if I
used the domain name.

I was told by many people (only one of whom was rude) to look at /etc/nsswitch.conf and
its documentation. From that reference, I fixed my problem immediately.
