Thank for your reply
In Solaris 1.x it was a program called installboot. See if that gets
you anywhere.

For SunOS 4 this is documented in the section of the manuals about restoring
damaged root and /usr disk partitions.
If memory serves, the first thing you do is format/partition the disk.
Then do an installboot, and then newfs the disk. You should check the Sun OS 5
manuals for some similar set of instructions.

Good Luck.

On sunOS, there is some "installboot" which will install the boot block on the disk. You could check that out.

I don't know about Solaris on a PC, but on my Sun, I have to run installboot to install the boot blocks on the partition from which I want to boot. If you can't boot your system at all, you may have to boot from another device (like the CDROM) and run installboot from there. Here's the example from the man page for installboot on Solaris 2.3 (I don't imagine its changed much in 2.4):
The ufs bootblock is in /usr/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk, to install the bootblock on slice 0 of target 0 on controller 1, use: example# /usr/sbin/installboot /usr/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
Good luck.

cd /sbin ./installboot /lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0
This will install a boot block on slice 0 of target 3...
