Thanks again to all the people that replied to my first summary.

The solution to my problem was to add the fully qualified hostname in my
.rhosts file. Ironicly, if I have a fully qualified hostname in my
.rhosts file (babbage.csee.usf.edu), I am not able to rsh password-less to
the SunOS 4.x machines. To solve this, I have both, the hostname and the
fully qualified hostname in my .rhosts file.
~/.rhosts
babbage.csee.usf.edu ruiz
babbage ruiz
My nsswitch.conf looks like this:
hosts: dns nis [NOTFOUND=return] files
Thank you very much to: Richard Sands <ras@hubris.cv.com>
This is what he wrote to me:
Depending on what name service you are using for the hosts
map you may need to use a fully qualified hostname (ie mysun.myorg.com)
in the .rhosts/hosts.equiv files.
