The overwhelming answer (as a matter of fact the only answer) was:
Are these backups being done "live", i.e., with users active on the
machine? If so, perhaps someone was doing directory deletions during
your backup. If so, be aware that this may have a negative effect on
these backups, as in "I can't restore these files!", even if they
*weren't* the ones deleted.
