I asked this question back in December.

Subject: netmasks - using different netmasks for two ethernet ports

We are trying to reconfigure our network to use a reasonably limited
amount of addressing space. We have been allocated (don't ask me where
from - you don't want to know) two blocks of IP addresses, to whit
159.245.72-75 and 159.245.95-98. My routing machine is running SunOs
4.1.1 (to be upgraded to 4.1.4 later this week).
What we want to do is to run the whole block 72-75 as a large backbone
network, and then subnet the other addresses down into subnets of 32
hosts, so my routing machine will have attached to it
_________
159.245.72-75 ------ | machine | -------- 159.245.98.96-127
---------
How do I do this ? My netmasks file entry is:
159.245.0.0 255.255.255.224
so do I need to do something weird with ifconfig in the boot scripts ?
Or is what I'm trying to do beyond the state of the art ?

The bottom line is that we can't do it. I never understood if it was
actually not allowed within the IP subnetting standard or if it was
just SunOS4.1 which can't cope. But it is not possible to divide a
Class B address into different parts with different subnet masks (RIP
was cited as not supporting this).
