...for their suggestions, which were, respectively:
1- check your uid field very carefully
2- check for blank lines in passwd file
3- don't forget about pwck and grpck
I *had* temporarily forgotten about pwck/grpck and actually written both a
perl script and a c prg to check the files. Unfortunately, both failed to
point out the *blank line* at the end of the file. :'}
