Thanks to all who replied.
The basic answer was - eliminate the /etc/hostname.le0 file.
Note: this implies that you have one to start with.
Just a couple of notes:
1) sys-config or what ever runs after you do a sys-unconfig will
assume the existence of ethernet and configure your
machine using le0.
2) you can't sys-unconfig without hostname.le0.
So - what we had to do -
boot machine and configure everthing using le0
rename hostname.le0 to hostname.tr0
Make sure that /var/yp/binding/domainname/ypservers was
up to date (we don't broadcast over our token ring)
change our default router
reboot
This works.
However, I would like to point out that this works because we are in
our main office which has token ring and ethernet.
The final location of this machine is token ring only. It would have
been a little more arduous had we installed there - for one thing when
we booted it up after a sys-unconfig, we could not have said we used
NIS or it wouldn't come up. Or if we did, we would have had to L1-A and
fix stuff then.
It would be nice if on multiple interface machines that
the interface to use to start with were selectable during the
configuration process.
