SUMMARY: sendmail S6

Problem:
sendmail 5.0/SVR4 unable to deliver to various valid addresses. Particularly
worrisome was an inability to deliver to a local subdomain. I thought this
was due to a problem with ruleset S6.

Suggestions:
Most people recommended using sendmail.mx rather than the default version (we
were already using sendmail.mx). In addition, a lot of people recommended
moving from sendmail 5.0 to sendmail 8.6.9, claiming that this move did away
with the majority of the problems they had encountered.

I included a bounced header transcript in my original posting. Opinions varied
as to what the header indicated: most people felt it indicated that the remote
configuration was faulty.

Solution:
Tried sendmail 8.6.9 - problem persisted. Rather than compound the problem
with a new version of sendmail that I don't know, I moved back to sendmail 5.0
which I'm reasonably comfortable with (the configuration files for the two
versions are somewhat different).

Reloaded and reconfigured sendmail from scratch just to make sure that I wasn't
working with a corrupt or non-standard executable/config file. Followed all
the steps recommended in the "How to Fix a Cranky Mail System" document (e-mail
me for a copy). Problem persisted.

Reconfigured our system so that instead of multiple mail servers in the domain
to cope with remote accounts, all mail is handled by a single server. This
fixed the problem, not just the local subdomain but all problematic addresses. The only problem with this solution as it stands is that users have to log
onto the mail server host to read their e-mail. *shrug*
