The original problem was a Sparc 5 running Solaris 1.1.1 Rev B hangs when using
token ring as its only network port.
The two responses that hit on the solution were as follows:

What revision of the token ring board do you have installed in your
sparc? (you can tell from the part number on the board...it will look
like xxx-xxxx-XX, where the last XX is the revision number.)
If it is 02, that MIGHT be the problem.
(Sun admitted that the 02 rev has problems)

Couple of months ago we had exactly the same problem with SS5. The fix appears
to patch 101508-06 or later. Without it you can't use any additional SBUS card
in SS5.
