FIRST OFF; THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

THE QUESTION:

> various types of information.
> We have an NIS enviornment and at this time we do not run DNS.
> The network is isolated from the Internet.
>
> Does anyone know if I have to run DNS to get this work?
> If I do have to run DNS can I run it together with NIS?

ANSWER:
I WASN'T VERY CLEAR ON MY QUESTION AND AS A RESULT
I SEEMED TO HAVE ANGERED SOME PEOPLE FOR WASTING BANDWIDTH AND
NOT REFERENCING THE MANUALS FOR
WHICH I DO APOLOGIZE.

YES, NIS AND DNS CAN COEXIST FOR WHICH I KNEW, BUT I WASN'T
CERTAIN IF THE CALL ROUTINES FROM THE MOSAIC APPLICATION
WOULD MATTER IF I WAS RUNNING NIS OR DNS AND IF THERE WAS
A PREFERENCE.

I don't like to do this, but I have received a number of requests
for the responses. So I will try to truncate as much as possible and
satisfy everyones wishes.

Xmosaic doesn't need DNS and neither does Windows mosaic Alpha 6,
but the 16 bit Windows alpha-2 seemed to want it. I haven't tried
netscape on the PCs yet.

When you get Mosaic from ncsa there are two versions:

        NIS
        DNS

NIS and DNS will run together under 4.1.x I'm currently
doing this on a 4/280 running as a master NIS server and
our ppp internet server.

You will need to run dns on your internet connection
to at least tell it where to go look up host names.

I run my 4/280 as a primary DNS for in house ip addresses
and forward any unknown ip addresses to myu service
provider to let them resolve them.

Works well. This way if my internet conenction goes down,
all my internel email is not affected since my local
site can still resolve the host names internally.

If you are running mosaic from your pc now you
have some other issues.
Let me know if that's the case.

The answer I feel was very helpful was from Joe Welfeld
Thanks Joe:

You do not have to run DNS for mosaic to run. Typicaly the application does
a call to a library function "gethostbyname" this call will return an IP
address (or not) by the following rules:

if no NIS and no DNS:

the IP lookup is via your /etc/hosts file.

if NIS and no DNS:

The IP lookup is via your NIS host map.

if DNS and no NIS:

first you /etc/hosts file then by DNS.

if NIS and DNS:

First by NIS map then by DNS.

It is easy to run a DNS resolver with NIS (see sun-managers-faq), but you
must supply a DNS server (or have access to one).

If you are running mosaic for internal use only then NIS is sufficiant.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
You don't need to run DNS if you use straight IP numbers when connecting
internally from PCs. However, if you want to use hostnames, you'll need
to have *something* running DNS, since most PC IP products won't really
understand NIS (and I stress the not-100%-ness of the word "most").

but too many people wanted it.

                        once again thanks everyone
